Definition of an old out-of-the-money bill
Old out-of-date bills are banknotes that are no longer legal tender, also known as "out-of-date" bills. These are old banknotes that have been demonetized by the issuing central bank, which manages banknote circulation. They have therefore been withdrawn from circulation and are no longer accepted as a means of payment, having been replaced by new denominations.
The main reason for introducing a new series of banknotes is to combat counterfeiting. Improving security features makes it ever more difficult for counterfeiters to produce counterfeit bills.
We distinguish between two categories of banknotes: the old out-of-date banknotes, which have been replaced by the euro in countries within the euro zone, and the others.
Exchanging old euro zone banknotes
As the euro is the official currency of the European Union, the national currencies of the member states have been or are to be gradually replaced in wallets, with the exception of two.
