The 5 Francs Union et Force du Consulat coin.
This 5 Franc Ecu silver coin was produced during the Consulate period (1799-1804).
The Consulate, born of the coup d'état of 18 Brumaire An VIII (November 9, 1799), put an end to the Directoire regime (1795-1799). This new political system, established by the constitution of An VIII, introduced an authoritarian regime led by three consuls, although real power was exercised by the First Consul, Napoleon Bonaparte, who became consul for life in 1802. This regime lasted until May 18, 1804 (Floreal 28, Year XII), marking the end of the First French Republic and the beginning of the First Empire.
