Napoleon III was the first President of the French Republic to be elected by universal male suffrage on December 10, 1848, marking a turning point in the country's history. Following his coup d'état on December 2, 1851, he put an end to the Second Republic and restored the Empire to his advantage in 1852, becoming the last French monarch under the title of Emperor of the French.
He took advantage of the unstable political climate in the wake of the 1848 Revolution to win election as a representative of the people, and then as President. His rise to power and his role in the transition from the Republic to the Empire marked a decisive chapter in French history.
