Redeemable or non-redeemable gold coin

A marketable gold coin is also known as a quoted gold coin or stock market gold coin. It is also referred to as a coin in exchangeable condition.

Redeemable Gold Coin

A coin is said to be exchangeable when it meets the quality and authenticity criteria corresponding to the standards in force on the stock market:

  • purity greater than or equal to 900/1000th
  • minted after 1800
  • which are or have been legal tender in their country of origin
  • perfect state of preservation

If a gold coin meets all these criteria , it benefits from a premium recognized on the market, in addition to the value of the gold it contains. This premium corresponds to the difference between the price for its net weight in gold and its actual price.

Here are the types of non-redeemable gold coins:

  • Collector or numismatic coins
  • Modern gold coins

The required perfect state of preservation is not met when :

  • the gold coins were set in jewelry.
  • The gold pieces have been rubbed or polished.
  • an impact or inclusion is visible to the naked eye.
  • Twisted and bent gold coins.
  • Gold coins that are broken, cut or have badly damaged blanks.

Keep your exchangeable gold coins under seal

Buying exchangeable coins to invest in gold is a safe bet, and has strong arguments against the gold bar. It's important to keep your exchangeable gold coins in a quality seal to guarantee their value on the gold market. Indeed, the state of wear is essential to guaranteea coin's marketability, as bullion coins that are too worn cannot be valued at their market value.
It is therefore advisable to keep them sealed to ensure that they remain in marketable condition.
