Dimension of a coin

Coin value is a term used in numismatics. Find out what it means.

What is the value of a coin?

Definition

This is the reference value close to the retail price at which a private individual can reasonably buy a currency.

Explanations

A quotation in figures implies the existence of a reasonable number of buyers and sellers, as well as copies of the quoted coin, available in sufficient quantity. If there are no buyers, sellers or coins, we cannot consider there to be a quotation, but only one or two price references. These prices may vary considerably, even for the same item.

Of course, the quotations are intended for the general public. In fact, a specialized collector can bid well above the quotation to secure his purchase. For example, the acquisition of a specific vintage is more important to him than to a buyer who has a choice and is only looking for one example of the type.
